Comprehension

Your child will learn to follow story structure, plot, and character development through lively guided discussions in class, and online lessons and quizzes at home. Strong comprehension makes reading fun and rewarding.

v

Fluency

Doing a substantial amount of reading in this program improves students’ fluency, the ability to read quickly, easily, and accurately. This makes reading effortless and pleasurable, so your child will become fully engaged in the books he or she reads.

Nonfiction & Textbooks

Your child will learn skills and strategies to meet the challenges of reading nonfiction. Students learn how to identify main ideas, recognize how information is organized, and retain what they read. They apply these new skills in nonfiction passages and science and social studies textbooks.

Long-Word Decoding

Students learn to recognize prefixes, suffixes and syllables and practice an effective strategy for reading long words. Kids love this part of the program because it gives them the confidence to tackle more challenging reading.

Independent Reading

The most important thing your child can do to prepare for next year is read a lot. During this program, your child will read two classic children’s novels. Through guided discussions, students improve comprehension and learn to identify with the main characters and imaginatively participate in their adventures. Getting absorbed in these great books will promote a lifelong love of reading and lead to future academic success.

“After this class, she’s breezing through the chapters. It’s taking her less time to get through them and she can tell you more about the story. She understands it more, she’s comprehending better. It’s definitely an improvement.”

– Mary, Parent of an Entering 5th Grader

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Summer Reading Skills Program right for my child?

All entering 5th graders benefit from improving their reading skills over the summer. In class, the teacher provides support and guidance for each student. Interactive online lessons are tailored to each child’s skill level and needs. Every student makes progress during the program.

What happens in class?
Weekly classes are led by trained, enthusiastic teachers. Every class includes independent reading and comprehension-building discussions in classic children’s literature, along with instruction in reading skills for textbooks and nonfiction. Your teacher will work individually with your child to develop his or her skills.
What will my child do at home between classes?

Between classes, your child will complete independent reading assignments and interactive online lessons. Lessons cover skills like comprehension, reading nonfiction, and long-word decoding. The lessons are easy for students to follow and complete on their own.

How do I choose which level of instruction is appropriate for my child?

Our program combines weekly classes with interactive online lessons between classes.  The classroom instruction is appropriate for all entering 5th graders, while the online lessons are tailored to each student’s current reading level. When you enroll, you’ll be asked to tell us more about your child’s reading ability so that we can provide the correct online lessons to help him or her grow as a reader.

Use the following guidelines to determine which reading level is right for your child’s online lessons:

Weak Reader — Your child has struggled with reading in 4th grade and experiences frustration while reading.

Average Reader — Your child has been on track with reading in 4th grade.

Strong Reader — Your child has been very successful with reading in 4th grade.

Can I attend class with my child?
Parents are welcome to attend all or part of any class with their child, but are not required to do so. Many parents enjoy observing the classes.
Is it possible to make up missed classes?

If you have a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to attend a make-up lesson in another class or take an interactive online make-up lesson. Enroll now in the program with the most convenient schedule for you, then simply call or email us if you need any make-ups.

What is the class size?
To ensure that all students have a great experience, we cap enrollment at a maximum of 20 students. Your child will get personal attention from the teacher and have a chance to actively participate in group discussions.
Are any program discounts available?

Yes, we offer the following discounts:

Family Discount: After enrolling one student, you will receive a $30 discount for each additional student you enroll in a summer program. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.

Re-enrollment Discount: If a student has previously participated in our program, that student is eligible for a $50 re-enrollment discount.
